We are looking to train a new batch of Citizen Scientists to help monitor sedimentation of our coldwater streams in the Sky Island area (an area including the headwaters of Catheys Creek, the Davidson, N and S Fork Mills, Pigeon and Tuckasegee Rivers). Our sedimentation surveyors will assess forest roads and trails to identify significant erosion and sedimentation sources that are delivering sediments to coldwater streams.
Additional opportunity to be involved in our Citizen Science program is available through our aquatic organism passage (AOP) surveys, where stream crossings are assessed to identify whether culverts, fords or bridges are barriers to fish passage. Data collected from both programs will lead directly to on-the-ground land management and conservation plans.
You do not have to be an angler or a Trout Unlimited member to take part in these initiatives. If you are interested in becoming a Community Scientist with Trout Unlimited but cannot make this event, we will be holding other trainings in the Sky Island area and Wilson Creek area this summer.
Please RSVP to receive additional information prior to the training.
