Maple Wood Nature Center
Sugar Shack

A Maple Wood Nature Center host serves as a greeter and welcomes the public into the building and answers their questions. A host may also be asked to assist the naturalist with program preparation, answer the telephone, maintain the bird feeding area, and keep the building tidy. A host is an essential role at the Nature Center because he or she frees the naturalist to go to the other county parks and do programs. A volunteer with an education or outdoor background may also enjoy working with the naturalist to create and lead programs or crafts for the public or schools. Maple Wood Nature Center is open every Wednesday, from 8 -4; Saturday from 9 -5; and Sunday from 1-5. I am seeking volunteers who can serve one or two days a month. All hosts will receive training on basic building operations and park trails. Hosts are welcome to get outside and enjoy the park while volunteering. Volunteers will receive gifts of gratitude for their service. The naturalist will also have volunteer gatherings and outings planned throughout the year. In February and March, Maple Wood Nature Center operates a sugar bush and makes maple syrup. Hosts can help gather sap and assist with school groups. The third weekend in March is our annual Maple Syrup Days Festival.

Mission Statement

To develop and maintain a system of parks that preserves open space and natural areas and offers outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.

Description

The LaGrange County Department of Parks and Recreation was formed in 1969, and now has 11 parks. It has a history of acquiring and preserving natural areas throughout the county. Park facilities and programs provide environmental education and opportunities for passive recreation, like hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and swimming. The Department continues to develop new programs, and add shelters and trail systems. Maple Wood Nature Center hosts the Maple Syrup Days event in March and provides a flexible community building for events and educational presentations. It is a destination for many local school field trips. Pine Knob Park has a 3-D archery course as part of the existing trail system, a lake for fishing, and walking trails through a variety of habitats. Delt Church Park has several pavilions for rental, a MegaTower playground, 18 hole disc golf course, and wooded walking trails. Dallas Lake Park features a public beach, wetland Nature Preserve, and several shelters for rent.
