Mentor an Immigrant Student in College with Enroot

ORGANIZATION: Enroot

  • 9 people are interested

English Language Learner (ELL) students complete college at lower rates than almost every other cohort in Massachusetts. Adequately supporting the ELL student population before and during college remains a major challenge for most communities. Enroot’s College Success Program aims to improve college completion rates for low-income first-generation ELL students by continuing to support students who complete our College Access program during their first two years of college.

Time & Location: This is a flexible mentoring role. Our program expectations are as follows:

  • Check in with your mentee biweekly (via text, phone, facebook, WhatsApp, etc.)
  • Hold longer check-ins (including phone, video or in-person meetings) at least once per month, sometimes addressing certain topics that Enroot will provide
  • Meet with your student 2-4 times per semester (if you or your student is long-distance, this can be a virtual meeting). Take advantage of when your student is home on breaks!

Curricular Content Every month, Enroot staff will provide content to discuss with your student, ranging from study habit techniques to self-care to dorm-life.

Enroot Orientation & College Success/Mid-Year Training: Attend an initial orientation, and 1.5 hour training in August to learn how to successfully mentor a college student. In February, attend a 1.5 hour training on continued best practices.

Cultural Consciousness Training: Cultural Consciousness training is mandatory for all new mentors.

Communications: Read our monthly newsletters, bimonthly 15-minute phone check-ins and emails with updates on your student.

Tracking Meetings: Keep track of how often you talk or meet and what you focus on.

Mission Statement

Enroot serves immigrant high school students in Cambridge and Somerville, MA. Our students hail from more than 30 countries and speak more than 20 languages. All of our students are matched 1-1 with a caring adult mentor. Our mentors help our students to dream big, set goals, and pursue them. Some pairs meet up each week at Enroot's office for structured activities, while others meet up once a week to work on college applications at a local coffee shop. Mentors guide their mentees in the following areas: building positive relationships, exploring careers, planning higher education, and practicing English.

Description

Mentors must be over 21 years of age. Mentoring typically happens between 6:00 - 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Specific location and timing is dependent on the student's cohort and school. We are specifically looking for mentors who speak one (or more!) of the following languages: Spanish, Haitian Creole, Bengali, Amharic, Portuguese, or Hindi. Speaking another language is not a requirement and we encourage anyone interested to apply!
