HistoriCorps - Saving Places

Join HistoriCorps to save the Pinedale Ranger Station! We'll provide all meals, tools, training, equipment, and a campsite!

Designed by USFS architects and then constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, the Pinedale Ranger Station is notable for its American Craftsman and Bunglaow style architecture. This significant building has earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places. Its primary purpose as an administrative buildings was to manage timber sales that were primarily connected to the lumber mill town of Standard only three miles away.

Pinedale rests at a higher elevation (about 6,000' of altitude), which draws visitors from the valley holding Phoenix and Tucson looking for a cool summer getaway. Higher even still, about 2 hours away, is Dzil Ligai Sí'án(also known as Mount Baldy), which is considered a sacred site for the Apache. The forest boundary meets the Apache Nation's land about halfway up the mountain's slope. This area also features the prominent Mogollon rim and eight cold water lakes (a rarity in the region!). Our partner shares, "From the Mogollon (pronounced: muggy-own) Rim’s 7,600- foot elevation, vista points provide inspiring views of the low lands to the south. The Rim extends two hundred miles from Flagstaff into western New Mexico."

This special, enigmatic region holds incredible history, scenery, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails to enjoy. Join this HistoriCorps project to bring the historic Guard Station back to public service! Our interesting and varied scope of work will go a long way toward keeping this building in public service for generations to come.

Scope of Work

Volunteers will work alongside expert field staff to learn the skills necessary to undertake and accomplish this significant preservation project. Paint is often the first line of defense against the wear and tear of time and environmental factors when it comes to preservation, and a well-protected building is also less likely to be vandalized. We'll be doing our part to rehabilitate this ranger station so it can continue to watch over the forest!

  • Repaint historic wood surfaces in order to protect the building's exterior: 50% (HistoriCorps is a certified lead-safe firm)
  • Repair and replace deteriorated trim and siding: 10%
  • Rehabilitate historic window sashes and frames 10%
  • Reglaze windows 10%
  • Replace broken glass 10%
  • Repaint windows 10%
Please note: Tasks vary by day and by week, depending on a variety of factors including: weather, project priorities, previous groups' work, and more. Though it is likely you will get to learn and practice most or all of the above tasks, it is not guaranteed. The higher percentage of the scope a particular task is, the more likely you will get to practice it.

Mission Statement

HistoriCorps saves and sustains historic places for public benefit through partnerships that foster public involvement, engage volunteers and provide training and education.

Description

HistoriCorps is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works through partnerships to mobilize volunteers to save and sustain our nation’s special places while providing educational and outdoor experiences. We are based in the Rocky Mountain region and from there are able to coordinate and instruct projects throughout the United States.

Founded in 2009, HistoriCorps has worked in 17 states to preserve over 135 historic buildings and structures, none of which would have been possible without the generous contribution of over 40,000 volunteer hours - all thanks to terrific volunteers like you!

Volunteers learn preservation trades skills in some of America's most spectacularly beautiful places, including roof repair and replacement, masonry repointing and repair, log restoration and reconstruction, door and window restoration and much more. While most of our projects do not require any previous work experience, others are designed for the intermediate tradesman looking to learn a new skill. Our projects are located in historic and unique places on public lands. Some projects are backcountry and require hiking or horsepacking to get crews and supplies to the site, while other projects are drive-up accessible. Some sites need basic stabilization or painting, while others need an entire summer to be rehabilitated. What all the projects have in common is the opportunity for dedicated volunteers to make a tangible and positive difference in the future of threatened historic resources.
