Our Story

In 2014 Samir Lakhani was in rural Cambodia working on a project to build sustainable fish
ponds. Walking through a village one day, he saw a woman using laundry detergent-a toxic and
dangerous substitute for soap-to bathe her infant child.

Distressed, Samir returned to his Cambodian hotel room-and washed his hands. It dawned on
him that that soap bar had been individually packaged, shipped in, and used once-and it was
about to be thrown away. At that moment Eco-Soap Bank was born in a hotel bathroom in Siem Reap.

Eco-Soap Bank is a humanitarian and environmental non-profit organization working to save, sanitize, and supply recycled hotel soap for the developing world. Samir accepted a CNN Heroes award for his work with Eco-Soap Bank in December 2017.

Description

Lack of access to soap remains a critical factor in fighting the spread of preventable diseases worldwide. In some areas of the developing world, only 1% of households have soap for handwashing. Eco-Soap Bank seeks to address the critical need for hygiene. Working since 2014, Eco-Soap Bank has sustainably supplied over one million people with soap and hygiene education.
