Become a Reading Mentor with The Shadow Project and empower a student with learning challenges to succeed!
As a Reading Mentor, you'll work one-on-one with students with learning challenges, motivating them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using assistive reading technology. You'll mentor in a public school classroom during the regular school day.
We are looking for volunteers (18+ years old) who can commit to 2 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months (Fall 2019, Winter 2020, or Spring 2020). Volunteers will begin in January and continue until Spring Break, with the option to continue to the end of the year.
Currently, we are seeking volunteer mentors to work with children at the following schools:
- Duniway Elementary School (Wednesday mornings)
- Abernethy Elementary School (Thursday mornings)
- Woodmere Elementary School (Thursday afternoons)
Please express interest by completing our volunteer interest form (https://tinyurl.com/y5dche35), or contact us at serve@shadow-project.org for more information. Thank you! We look forward to hearing from you.

Mission Statement
The Shadow Project envisions an education system that normalizes and celebrates learning differences and supports every student to thrive in school. We have a proven track record of fostering social and academic growth for schoolchildren with learning challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and trauma, many of whom are from communities of color, low-income backgrounds, and/or are English Language Learners. With the conviction that all students can graduate from high school given access to the right supports, The Shadow Project provides innovative tools and techniques tailored to diverse learners and supports teachers in integrating those tools into their classrooms. Together we've helped to unleash the potential of more than 14,000 capable learners in grades K-12 in Portland, McMinnville, and Salem.
Description
Founded by a Portland mom whose son, who has dyslexia, was ready to give up on school in second grade, The Shadow Project has helped foster success for children in pre-K - th grade whose special education needs include dyslexia, ADHD, autism, speech/language challenges, and trauma.
The Shadow Project has evolved from an all-volunteer "mom and pup" operation to a 501(c)3 nonprofit partnered with schools in multiple Oregon counties. The organization has three proven programs (https://www.shadow-project.org/school-programs/)that celebrate the inherent worth of every child.
