Our Adult Basic Education (ABE) group tutoring program focuses on helping local adults living in poverty improve basic reading/writing skills and VERY rudimentary computer skills (using email, filling out online forms, etc). You would be working with the same student every week, and the commitment required is one semester. Training and lesson plans are provided! Your Session Leader will be available every class to offer you and your student support as needed. Group Tutoring sessions are held Monday nights, 6:00-8:00pm at Seven Oaks (1108 Moorland Rd). Tutor Requirements
- Volunteers must be 18yr or older
- Be patient, kind, and non-judgmental
- Reliable transportation is required! (If you are planning to take a bus to/from your tutoring sessions, please research your route ahead of time to be sure you understand the commute you are committing to.)
- Miss no more than two classes once you are trained

Literacy Network teaches reading, writing, communication, and computer skills to Dane County adults so they can achieve financial security, well-being and deeper engagement with their families and the community.
Description
Literacy Network assists adults in Dane County who are low-income and who need help improving their literacy skills, whether they are immigrants/refugees learning English, adults reading/writing below a 5th grade level, or folks studying to pass their GED or high school equivalency exam. We offer free group classes and trained volunteer tutors at locations throughout the Madison area. Programs operate on a three semester schedule: spring, summer, and fall, and we recruit interns and tutors every semester.
