Mission Statement

To create learning environments where children play, discover and connect to the world around them to develop as lifelong learners and leaders.

Description

History: The Children’s Museum of Tampa was founded in 1986 and operated out of a small storefront before moving to its location at Safety Village, next to Lowry Park Zoo, about 20 years ago and renamed itself Kid City. The facility was limited by its size, location, and nature as an outdoor facility. Plans for a new museum began in 2004, construction began in March 2009 and newly named Glazer Children’s Museum opened to the public on September 25, 2010.

Early childhood education is our main focus. The Museum is a family-oriented place where children and adults can learn about themselves and
the world they live in through exploration, interaction, role-play and direct experience.

This is a hands-on museum! Visitors will get the most out of the visit to the Museum through touching, exploring and playing.

The Audience: 200,000 visitors annually, areas for children ages 1 to 10 years old, family resources, focus on learning process, program heavy, Sunshine State Standards for learning, diverse, fostering healthy interactions.

Impact will bring visitors to the Tampa Bay area, helping economic growth in our city and county. Focus on multi-disciplined early childhood education places the Museum uniquely apart from other informal educational resources in the region. The Museum works with other local and regional family and child service organizations to deliver needed programs and services.

Exhibits have been carefully designed to nurture children’s imaginations, to cultivate their sense of place and to bolster their understanding that they are capable people with good ideas.

The Museum: 53,000 square feet, 12 theme gallery areas, 170 exhibits, accessible, bilingual, safe, comfortable, interactive, engaging, 5,600 square foot traveling exhibit space and education center, birthday rooms, Café, Toy Store, 1,000 square foot Board Room, 1,000 square foot park terrace on third floor, ever-changing experiences.

Hours: The Museum is open Monday - Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 1pm to 6pm.
