Position Overview:

Westcliff University Track and Field is seeking a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2019 season. This is a unique position that will adapt to a candidate’s strengths. This role would assist in operation and execution of every area of a Men’s and Women’s frack and field program. Including but not limited to assisting in training, preparation for competition, scouting, marketing and recruiting. This position will provide experience and support for those who wish to pursue a career in coaching track and field at the collegiate level.

NOTE: This is a volunteer opportunity and the selected individual will not receive compensation for the services rendered. However, there MAY be opportunities available for a graduate assistantship.

Coaches must be high-energy, competitive and hard working. A strong desire to be creative and bring original ideas and concepts to the programs as well as aiding student-athletes perform to the best of their abilities both on and off the track. Strong communication and organizational skills required. Technical skills (Video Tech Skills) are not required but can be helpful. A background in business and entrepreneurial pursuits or education is also preferred (for those seeking graduate assistantships).

General Responsibilities:

The volunteer/graduate assistant coach reports directly to the Head M & W Cross Country & Track Coaches and is responsible for assisting in the planning, directing, and evaluating all aspects and facets of a successful M & W Cross Country & Track & Field program at the NAIA level. Duties include, but not limited to: serving as a teacher of Cross Country & Track, recruitment of highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes, monitor academic progress and eligibility, coach and recruit a specific number of athletes for the M & Cross Country & Track & Field teams at the college, and effectively analyze and teach the fundamentals skills and strategies of the sport. (Specifically, for the throwing, distance, jumps, and possibly sprints/hurdles events). Plan, organize, conduct, and evaluate practices session along with develop, implement, and evaluate game plans and strategies. Assist with coordinating official and unofficial visits, written correspondence and telephone communications. Serve as a leader, mentor, and role-model to the student-athletes of the program. Assist Head Coach in the preparation and execution of fundraising initiatives. Strong organizational skills with an ability to effectively recruit is essential. Oversee administrative processes and procedures as assigned. Ensure compliance with all Westcliff student life, NAIA policies and Westcliff University policies & procedures.

Institution Requirements:

Graduate assistants cannot have dating relationships with athletes in the program they teach/coach at Westcliff University. All discretion should be used in graduate assistant and potential athlete relationships. Should any dating relationship begin with an athlete within a different sport, the graduate assistant must notify their supervisor immediately.

Graduate Assistant Academic Requirements:

To remain employed in the assistantship, the candidate must successfully progress through the graduate program requirements. If the candidate does not continually meet the graduate program requirements, the candidate could be terminated. However, if the candidate terminates employment, the candidate may continue enrollment by acquiring responsibility for the financial costs of the program.

Qualifications:

The two-year assistantship begins in August and includes tuition reduction. The candidate must enroll in one of the graduate programs that Westcliff University offers. The candidate must enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester. Bachelor’s degree required and college playing experience preferred. Applicant must obtain acceptance into desired Westcliff University graduate program and have a personal commitment to Westcliff’s mission of higher education. A valid driver’s license is required. Applicants must be able to work an untraditional work schedule (i.e. possible nights and weekends). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Westcliff is currently building it's athletics department and along with that, each program within that department. Our Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field program is looking to fill 3-4 voluntary and or possible graduate assistant positions. The incumbents should be well versed in the jumping, throwing, long distance and possibly the sprints/hurdles events.
