The Literacy Council provides volunteer tutors with the hands-on training, materials and ongoing support you will need to teach basic reading, writing and English language skills. We are introducing Literacy Zootering. You will receive the same training delivered using Zoom. Tutors and learners will be using Zoom together.

When you help someone improve their basic literacy skills or to speak English, you enable that individual to take advantage of a new world of opportunities - at home, at work, and in our community. Help us bring our mission to life.

About The Literacy Council

Location:

982 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103, US

Mission Statement

The Literacy Council exists to provide literacy instruction to individuals and families to strengthen communities --regardless of means or ability to pay --to improve quality of life for individuals --to advocate for literacy awareness and services

Description

The Literacy Council helps adults improve reading and English skills, along with basic math like telling time, and life skills, such as filling out forms or reading prescriptions. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteer tutors, students achieve greater personal independence while improving their reading and/or English literacy skills. They also improve their job prospects. Tutors help their students build their confidence through various types of learning, and this helps them succeed in other areas of life.

We offer the following services to our students, free of charge:

One-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, and/or numeracy and also speaking/listening for English as a Second Language (ESL),

Classes in Academic Skills, GED, ESL and basic computers

The Literacy Council helps change lives by assisting students with their basic educational needs so they can further their education elsewhere, or gain new or improved employment. One in five adults struggles with reading in the United States, and 40,000 in Boone, Ogle, and Winnebago counties alone. The average reading level of an entering native-born student is third grade, while ESL students can often already hold a conversation with their tutor when they begin working with one. Won't you join our staff of over 100 volunteer tutors making a difference in Rockford, one person at a time? We'd love to have you be a part of our wonderful, diverse community.
