ORGANIZATION: Ascension St. John Auxiliary

If you are an early bird and like working with people, this may be the spot for you. We are looking for friendly faces to be here as early as 6 am Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday to greet patients and their families and help them navigate the process of the cath lab.

Patients are asked to meet with the registrars first, then go to the recovery area and prep for cath lab procedures, the volunteer will escort the families to the recovery area for the prep of the procedure. Then once the patient has been taken to the procedure room, family and guests wait with the volunteer in the cath lab waiting area. The volunteers serve as liaisons to pass phone calls and information to the families and guests in the waiting room. Once a procedure is complete, the surgeons visit with the families face to face to answer questions and provide updates, and volunteer points the surgeon to the correct family. When the recovery area calls out the next time, they may ask that one or two family members be allowed to go back and visit the patient when the time is appropriate, and the volunteer will escort those family members to see their loved ones. Volunteers are also helpful because families often times like to take a break to get a bite to eat, pray in the chapel, or take a walk, and volunteers will make notes and take messages if the family leaves the waiting area.

This is a great opportunity for a college student to learn about the cath lab in a hospital, and it's a great opportunity for a senior adult to stay active and have contact with people. In either case, a volunteer will leave with the reward of knowing they have helped a family during a stressful, emotional time in their lives.

Currently we need help on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Ascension St. John Auxiliary is to serve our community with compassionate care and quality support for the patients, families and associates of St. John Medical Center, St. John Owasso, St. John Broken Arrow and St. John Sapulpa.

Description

For more than 65 years, the Ascension St. John Auxiliary has provided volunteer services and funded special projects for Ascension St. John. Today, volunteers are needed in several different areas within four of our main facilities: Ascension St. John Medical Center, Ascension St. John Owasso, Ascension St. John Broken Arrow and Ascension St. John Sapulpa.

The Auxiliary also has a model Junior Volunteer Program designed specifically for high school students, with goals to promote a lifelong commitment to community service and encourage medical career exploration.

Volunteer opportunities range from assisting professional staff in their patient care roles to manning guest services-related areas like our gift shops, information desks and flower delivery. Ascension St. John volunteers also greet and comfort families in emergency and surgical waiting areas and help with the patient admission and release processes.

Proceeds from the gift shops go toward special projects of the hospitals, such as facility improvements and expansions, as well as technology like digital mammography units and the da Vinci surgical robot that impacts lives in our community for years to come.
