11th hour volunteers offer a quiet, comforting presence at the bedside of dying patients. They provide comfort, reassurance and support to family members at a time when they may be feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

The Eleventh Hour Volunteers are amazing people who give their time, love and support to a patient that is actively dying. There are many people who have no one and are scared to die alone. The Eleventh Hour Volunteer eases the patients fear and holds a sacred space for transition. This volunteer may be asked to give respite to the family. The family needs to take care of themselves during this difficult time and may not want to leave their loved one. The Eleventh Hour Volunteer gives the family permission to leave, take a nap, eat, cry, shower, etc. If they family choose to stay, the Eleventh Hour Volunteer can encourage the family to tell stories and remember (if appropriate). The Eleventh Hour Volunteer is a support to the family and does his/her best to make sure the families needs are met. The Eleventh Hour Volunteer will have close contact and good communication with the hospice team. The Eleventh Hour Volunteer is a special soul who honors life during death. There is additional training for the Eleventh Hour Volunteer.

Must be comfortable around death.
