VAI operates an Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) program in Uptown, Chicago and Carol Stream, DuPage County to help community members who want to improve their English and to prepare for their citizenship interview. Committed volunteer teachers and tutors deliver English and Civics lessons in small groups or in 1-on-1 sessions. The agency provides materials, access to a library, and 12 hours of (required) training through Literacy Works. The training imparts necessary knowledge related to the naturalization process, including the citizenship interview.
This opportunity is great for individuals seeking ESL teaching experience with support, in a vibrant community. The program runs seven days a week. The agency will work with volunteers' schedules but has a particular need for instructors Monday through Friday in two hour time slots.
In light of COVID-19, the program is operating remotely. This is subject to change and we will keep volunteers fully informed as the situation evolves.
It's a wonderful feeling to be a part of someone's path to citizenship or to being competent at communicating in English.
