The Akili Academy Operations Team over the summer is always in need of volunteers. We have a few big projects in June that include the following general tasks:
- moving heavy furniture
- moving items from spaces into hallways
- sorting through books
- moving dollies/carts of items from one place to another
- sorting through and folding school merchandise
- organizing closets/spaces
- labeling

In July, tasks will look more like beautifying the spaces, moving furniture back into spaces, and prepping the building for the first day of school. More information on this will be known later in the month and will be updated here.

It is preferred that volunteers commit to at least a few hours between 8:45am and 3:45pm on a given day M-F. Returning volunteer groups are encouraged, but all help is welcome!

Description

Akili Academy is located in the newly-renovated historic William Frantz building in the Upper Ninth Ward. The campus features state-of-the-art classrooms, a Black Box Theatre, a gymnasium, and computer lab.

Local and state officials joined members of the Akili Academy community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 5, 2013. The event was planned in partnership with the Recovery School District (RSD) and commemorated the opening of the school. Frantz was one of the first sites of school integration in New Orleans when six-year-old Ruby Bridges attended the school in 1960. Elements of the site were restored to their original appearance in order to maintain the historical integrity of the building. Room 2306 serves as the "Ruby Bridges Room" with period furnishings and decor in honor of Mrs. Bridges’ brave contributions to society.
