Help people in need reach their education goals!

human-I-T is a collective group of smart humans that turns e-waste into opportunities for others. We fix donated technology and distribute it to those in need; we connect households with low-cost Internet service; and we provide free digital-literacy training.

As a socially responsible company leading the charge to close the digital divide, we are seeking Digital Literacy Volunteers to accelerate and expand our mission. As a Digital Literacy Volunteer, you would report to the Digital Literacy Coordinator.

Position responsibilities:

Once a week for four weeks, digital literacy tutors are on-hand in a computer lab to help adults reach their learning goals. As learners study online in a self-paced training program, you inspire and encourage them, and address their questions and difficulties. You co-create a learning environment that is welcoming, encouraging, and low-stress. You get to know learners’ goals and learning needs. You help them to practice good study habits, and to discover that learning about computers and the Internet is worthwhile and rewarding!

Specifications (schooling/experience level):

Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent. Credentials in computers or teaching are valued, but not required.

Skills:

Tutors should be patient and caring people who are good listeners. You do not need to be a computer expert, but you will need to be able to perform common tasks on a Windows PC. Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Digital literacy tutor sessions are held in community computer labs in different parts of Greater Los Angeles.

Description

-Test and evaluate computers for working components.

-Repurpose machines using working components.

-Repurposed machines will then be loaded with a secure, open source system that will ensure families always have up to date software at no cost.

-Open doors to repurposing process allowing volunteers to learn a vocation and earn a free computer (if certain qualifications are met).

This process will allow us to equip computers with specific software and links that promote education and prosperity.
