Facilitate Transportation Program for Seniors Living at Home
ORGANIZATION: VILLAGES NW - METRO
Please visit the new page to apply.
We are looking for a volunteer who can contribute about 10-15 hours a month to manage our transportation program, which helps seniors maintain their normal lives while continuing to live in their own homes. More than 100 volunteer drivers provide rides to medical appointments, shopping, personal appointments, recreation, exercise classes and even volunteer activities.
The Transportation Coordinator's role is to staff periodic meetings of the Transportation Affinity Group (volunteers in our 11 neighborhood-based "Villages" who train and supervise drivers in their geographic area), oversee the transportation program and advise the Villages NW Board of Directors on transportation issues.
This individual will also work with the Assistant Transportation Coordinator who maintains driver records including obtaining DMV records and registering new drivers for online National Safety Council training.
No prior knowledge of transportation processes is required. Experience working with volunteers and program management could be helpful. To apply or for more information, contact Grace Merchant, gracemerchant1@gmail.com, by June 30.

Mission Statement
Villages NW is reshaping the experience of aging. We keep older adults connected and active, contributing members of the community. With 11 neighborhood-based virtual villages, seniors make new friends close to home, participate in online coffees, happy hours and other social activities. We also help each other out when needed with neighbor-to-neighbor home maintenance, yard work and errands.
Description
The Village Movement is a holistic approach to vibrant, healthy aging. It combines a meaningful purpose in life; finding new friends as we begin to lose spouses and see less of long-time friends and neighbors; familiar surroundings; and preserving financial assets against the day when a higher level of care might be necessary. In addition to these quality of life issues, Villages fill gaps in support and services, which enable older adults to live independently.
We have 11 neighborhood-based villages with 600 members and a comparable number of volunteers in the Greater Portland Metro area. About half of our volunteers are also members.
Villagers are members rather than clients. About half volunteer in some way whether it is driving someone to the doctor, doing a little yard work, checking in with a member who is mostly homebound, working on activities or doing Village support.
