Our Adventures in Learning program is seeking a Creative Writing Facilitator! This program supports older adults who want to continue learning, engage in the community and make new friends. The program is volunteer driven and meets 40 Fridays per year, in 10-week sessions at rented space from the Central United Methodist Church, 5144 Oak St. Kansas City, MO, 64112. Each Friday there are multiple classes, activities, speakers and volunteer opportunities to attend. Adventures in Learning is a dynamic group of more than 70 individuals who are engaged in the community.

Teachers at Adventures in Learning are community volunteers committed to teaching new skills and developing existing interests and hobbies. The Creative Writing Teacher would facilitate classes on either a 5 week or 10-week schedule. The classes are flexible in time and dates. The teacher would facilitate a class of 5-15 older adults, lead group exercises in writing and encourage personal expression and creativity. Responsibilities include:

  • Arriving on time in order to facilitate
  • Taking attendance at each class
  • Communicating with attendees about any assignments given or desired
  • Work with the Shepherd’s Center Staff to schedule dates and class times

An ideal candidate for this position will:

* Have a relevant background or history with writing (Editing, journalism, poetry, etc.)
* Have a passion for teaching and group facilitation
* Be friendly and patient, a good ambassador of the program
* Ability to take initiative for troubleshooting when needed
* Have good communication skills
* Use critical thinking and ability to improvise when needed

This opportunity is available for each Friday that Adventures in Learning is in session, and scheduling is flexible.
