The non-profit Friends of the Public Garden seeks volunteer help at our Making History on the Common on Monday, June 5th. The event is a beloved field trip for over 1,000 Boston Public Schools students (grades 3 through 5) who learn about Boston’s history through stations set up on Boston Common. Here's our information page about the event: https://friendsofthepublicgarden.org/events/making-history-on-the-common/

I realize this is a workday and we’ve arranged our volunteer shifts so that one option is a 8:00 - 9:00 AM "set-up" shift that would allow you to help out early and then go about your day. The other shift is roughly 9:15 AM until 1:00 PM - but I’m very flexible to the times you have available; just let me know what works for you.

During-event tasks include: food tent (apples), check-in / info, and program helpers for various stations that we will be running with our nonprofit partners. Some of these stations involve 18th-century games, Boston Common protests, pillories as Colonial-era punishments, Three Sisters Garden, and the mapping of Boston. Let me know if you have a preference, especially if you’re interested in helping out at a station! We may also be escorting groups to and from the new Embrace monument on the other side of the Common.

Whatever your task, you will enjoy being part of an event that really reaches these urban kids. Please let me know which times and tasks are of interest to you!

About Friends of the Public Garden

Location:

69 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Friends of the Public Garden is to preserve, protect and enhance the Boston Common, the Public Garden and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in collaboration with the City of Boston Parks and Recreation department.

Description

The Friends preserve, protect and enhance the three parks by performing vital tree care, planting trees, restoring statues, replacing benches and advocating for appropriate use. The Parks Department does all that it can to maintain these properties but will never have the resources to meet their full needs or to bring about dramatic quality improvements and enhancements.

The Friends also sponsor special educational programs and events for the community, like the Annual Duckling Day parade on Mother's Day, Making History on the Common and a Summer Party.

A recent project of the Friends was the renovation of the Brewer Fountain Plaza and surrounding parkland on Boston Common. The Friends renovated the fountain's setting from the crest of the hill below the State House to Tremont Street. A special granite plaza now surrounds the fountain. The area has 10% more green with 43 new trees and improved grass areas. From April to October, the plaza is adorned with tables and chairs, umbrellas, a "reading room", a piano at lunchtime, and improved food options for visitors.

We have created a fountain setting which is a popular destination for people wanting to meet for lunch or just to retreat from the busy streets of Boston

during the day and evening, protected from the street by lush tree plantings. Adding to that is the beautiful view of the State House which combines to change this place, once avoided, into one of the most memorable and popular outdoor gathering places in Boston.
