CF Cycle for Life is a fun atmosphere to be a part of- it's main site is right on Alum Creek State Park's beach so you get to spend a bright and sunny day next to a great view. We have a DJ, tents with t-shirts and information, a wonderful cookout type of food area and of course, a fun group of cyclists who are riding for a wonderful cause as well as great company with volunteers and family. It's a perfect event to wrap up your summer!
Here's a little bit about us- Founded in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world's leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation was started by parents desperate to save their children’s lives. Their relentless and impassioned determination to prolong life has resulted in tremendous strides over the past 60 years in accelerating innovative research and drug development, as well as advancing care and advocacy. Virtually every approved cystic fibrosis drug therapy available now was made possible because of the Foundation and its supporters. Still, we believe no one should have to die at a young age. We will not rest until we have a cure for all people living with CF.
Now that you know us a little better, allow me to give you a brief overview of our Cycle event-
CF Cycle for Life is a fully-supported ride with route options of 20, 40 and 65 miles - perfect for beginners to advanced riders. There are fully stocked rest stops every 10-12 miles, bike mechanics for bicycle maintenance and repair, ride marshals to cheer the riders along the way and plenty of support vehicles to help everyone complete the ride.
Current Volunteer Opportunities are as follows-
-Set Up Volunteers- (5am-7am) help us unload the truck and set up the tents, food area, t-shirt area, and registration area.
-Registration Volunteers- (6:30am-8am) volunteers to check the riders in. This registration is an all paper process. You'll find the riders folder (they'll be alphabetically organized) and hand them their bib with their bib number on it, have them fill out the back, confirm their emergency contact info, and collect any funds they have to turn in.
-T-shirt Tent Volunteers- (6:30am-8am) hand out shirts to the riders who raised their minimum fundraising requirement. Also be available to help pin the bib numbers on the rider's shirt if needed.
-CF Branded Tent Volunteers- (6:30am-8am) be at the tent with information about the Foundation. This tent has our event calendar, documents about cystic fibrosis, and other programs we offer. Hand out these materials to anyone who would like them.
-Food Area Volunteers- (6:30am-2pm) be at the food tents to hand out breakfast before the ride and lunch when cyclists return. Also responsible for handing out water, juice, etc. If you enjoy grilling, we will need one or more people to use the grill to make hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. Serving consists of simply handing everyone who approaches the tent what they would like, not a waitress-type of serving. Also responsible for keeping the food tents organized and tidy.
-Rest Stop Volunteers- (7am-varies depending on your rest stop location but all will be finished by 3pm) this opportunity lets you be out along the route. We have tents strategically placed around the routes for each route option so cyclists can stop and for a quick break throughout the ride. You would be responsible for handing out the refreshments and snacks. Feel free to bring your own music, etc- these rest stops are laid back and fun. Before heading to your assigned rest stop you would stop at the main site (Alum Creek St. Park- The Beach) to get all the supplies needed for your site. You would then go to the site and set up your tent.
-Tear-Down Volunteers- (2:30pm-3:30pm - this time can also vary depending on how many people we have helping with tear down)- help us take down the tents and pack up remaining t-shirts, supplies, and food and load them on the truck.
The weather for this event for the past few years has been wonderful- sunny and fun! Come join us and make some of the last days of summer count by helping out a great cause and possibly make some new friends! :)
