The Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Alliance (SEMPBA), in partnership with UMass School for the Environment, is looking for a volunteer to help water, monitor and measure our Pitch Pine Study area in South Plymouth, MA. The Pitch Pine Study seedlings are part of a study to investigate the effects of mowing, previous fire history and introduction of forest charcoal on pitch pine subjects. This study is being conducted by Professor Jeff Licht, Remote Pitch Pine Forestry Investigation, the University of Massachusetts School for the Environment.

Responsibilities : Volunteers would be responsible for watering the seedlings once a week, from late June through late August, when evaporation is highest and storm events are fewer. Based on the volunteer’s interest, other possible measurements or research could be performed, and extra credit/certification of volunteer hours could be provided. We expect volunteers would be onsite for no more than 1 hour per week.

How To Apply: Please send a short paragraph discussing why you are interested to jefflicht64@gmail.com . Include your contact information, and please put "Pitch Pine Study Volunteer" in the subject line.

Mission Statement

SEMPBA is non-profit, all-volunteer group dedicated to preserving the Pine Barrens and all of the other natural communities within the Southeastern Massachusetts Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens Ecoregion.

This ecoregion is the 2nd largest coastal pine barrens remaining in the world. It extends from Duxbury through Cape Cod and the Islands, and as far inland as Middleborough. We believe that by fostering learning opportunities and building a network of conservation groups, businesses and individuals for more effective advocacy, we will be able to turn around the escalating trend of rapidly disappearing and deteriorating natural communities within the greater pine barrens of SE Mass. and move towards a future of cooperative living between humankind and the natural world.
