The City of San Francisco asked the California Historical Society to engage the public in the history of the Old Mint through Docent led tours. We are seeking individuals passionate about history, teaching, and learning to lead these tours. An ideal candidate is one with an internal drive to learn new and interesting information, feels comfortable with public speaking, and can responsibly meet deadlines and keep appointments.
Docents are given two trainings: one in the building with a historian and architect who is well versed in both touring guests and the building in general and one with the volunteer manager. They are provided additional reading materials which will provide critical insight and background on the history of the building as well as San Francisco.
This is a wonderful way to share San Francisco's history with the public and learn public facing skills, and about how historical organizations interact with the public.
The trainings total around 3-6 hours (not including readings, research, and other materials). The prospective docent will then provide a "test tour" for the volunteer manager where they will be provided feedback. After the test tour is approved the docent can begin giving public and private tours. Typically docents provide two public tours per month.
