ORGANIZATION: Special Olympics Montana

HOURS: 1 hour per week. Hours will increase the final week of the season with a trip to Butte for the State Basketball Championship

Primary Purpose: Special Olympics Montana Basketball Coaches are responsible for providing athletes with comprehensive sport training and preparation for multilevel competition. Coaches will be asked to organize practices and travel with the team to competition at the State Basketball Championship in Butte from November 7-9.

Primary Duties:

  • The Special Olympics Coach will ensure that all participating athletes have properly completed and submitted all required medical and registration material by established deadlines.
  • The Special Olympics Coach will assess each athlete to determine the individual and/or team skill level for training and competition in selected sports.
  • The Special Olympics Coach will develop an individualized training program for each athlete. The program shall include instruction in fundamental skills, conditioning and competition rules. The training and competition program will be a minimum of eight (8) weeks.
  • To know, understand and abide by the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules and understand the sport being coached.
  • Use acceptable and safe equipment.
  • Ensure appropriate sports skills instruction and safe competition.
  • Match athletes according to size, strength and ability.
  • Continually assess each athlete for participation in appropriate activities within, not challenged by his/her abilities.
  • Ensure acceptable supervision and maintain an adequate volunteer-to-athlete ratio 1:4.
  • Establish an emergency action plan that includes procedures for emergency medical support, postponements or cancellations, crisis communication and incident and accident reporting.
