Breaking Ground, New York’s largest supportive housing developer, recently acquired the former Watchtower Society Residences at 90 Sands Street in DUMBO, to convert into 100% affordable and supportive apartments. 90 Sands will bring 507 units of supportive, affordable housing to Brooklyn. In preparation for major rehabilitation of the building, we will need to inspect more than 500 apartments, and we are looking for 55+ volunteers to help us with this important work. Volunteers will be looking at the general condition of each unit as well as specific items such as windows, bathroom fixtures, closets, lighting, etc. and recording data. This work will take place over the course of two days, inspecting approximately 22 units each day.

Dates:

1. Tuesday, June 11th, 2019

2. Wednesday, June 12th, 2019

Timeframe: 11:00am - 4:00pm

Location: 90 Sands Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Volunteers needed per day: Minimum 20, Maximum 25

The plan is to break up into six (6) teams of four (4) volunteers (24 total), who will be accompanied by one Breaking Ground staff member. One team can comfortably complete one floor (22 units) in four hours. The remainder of the volunteers will be assigned data entry tasks using Breaking Ground provided laptops.

It is advised that volunteers come comfortably dressed in jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. If your team has branded t-shirts you’d like to work in, we strongly encourage wearing them, as we like to thank our volunteers on social media and having everyone in matching shirts makes for great photographs. Though lunch will not be provided for this activity, you may choose to bring your own, or visit one of the nearby restaurants.

About Breaking Ground

Location:

505 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10018, US

Mission Statement

Breaking Ground’s mission is to strengthen individuals, families and communities by developing and sustaining exceptional supportive and affordable housing as well as programs for homeless and other vulnerable New Yorkers.

Description

At Breaking Ground, we believe that everyone deserves a home.

That’s why, since 1990, we have been providing permanent affordable housing for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Beginning with a single building, we are now New York City’s largest provider of supportive housing. We own and/or operate 24 properties with over 3,530 apartments in New York City and beyond.

  • For chronically homeless people, we create safe, secure housing with essential on-site support services to help them address the psychosocial, mental, and physical health problems that are obstacles to independent living.
  • For those at risk of homelessness, our affordable housing provides an all-important safety net.

Our work has enabled more than 13,000 people to overcome or avoid homelessness since 1990, and we increase that number every single day. At the start of 2016, we have nearly 1,000 units of housing in various stages of development in the Bronx and Brooklyn, and are significantly expanding our Street to Home homelessness outreach program so that we can offer help to every single homeless person we meet.
