Mission Statement

We want to support those who have trouble supporting themselves. Service dogs are incredibly powerful partners that learn to help their owners perform tasks and create a unique, unbreakable bond. Our mission is to provide handicapped veterans with a specially trained service dog that helps them tackle everyday tasks and integrate into their communities, thereby achieving independence and a happier life. We also strive to engage veterans who want to help others in need by participating in our American Troops United service dog training program.

Description

How Do We Cut #22Vets Down?
Our American Troops United service dog training program allows veterans to train their own service dogs, or to train a service dog for another veteran in need. In the 18-month program, participating veterans receive an 8-week old puppy and learn the fundamentals of training a service dog. Classes are 3 to 5 days a week, from 1 hour to 3 hours per day. Every service dog trained is donated free of charge - that’s our way of saying thank you for all that you do.

Participating in the training program gives veterans a purpose, lets them interact with others, and allows them to use their problem solving skills. Veterans can train service dogs specifically to help mitigate symptoms of PTSD, as well as to help those with physical disabilities. Veterans who have a service dog report decreased depression and anxiety and are less likely to be hospitalized. Having a service dog allows them to feel supported and have a more "normal" life.

Through education and guidance, and by being involved at the beginning stages of training, veterans in the American Troops United program understand that they are part of something great-they are helping themselves and helping others. This is how we make a positive impact.
