ORGANIZATION: RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) of Washtenaw County

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to help a local non-profit staff its food pantry.

Available Roles:

Truck Unloader
Time: Monday’s 1PM-3PM (must commit to 1 Monday per month)
Tasks: Assist with the unloading of food truck, sorts, repackages and stocks food.
Job Requirements: Assist with the clean, safe and efficient operation of unloading the food. Stock pantry shelves and basement with incoming food. Sort and help organize food, repackage if needed. Works in team environment with other volunteers. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. repeatedly. Carry food up and down stairs, multiple times. Knowledge of how to use a hand truck or the ability to learn.

Pantry Assistant
Time: Tuesday 1PM-630PM Wednesday 9AM-1PM
Tasks: Accompany the consumer through the pantry helping them to select the food for their household, engaging while ensuring that they feel welcomed and comfortable. Assist with carrying groceries, encourage healthy choices, help to reach items when consumer asks. Answering questions consumers may have in accordance with the guidelines and procedures identified by the Food Pantry Coordinator or designate. Must be able to lift up to 20lbs. repeated. Involves walking, lifting, reaching to significant degree.

Pantry Stocker
Time: Tuesday 1PM-6:30PM, Wednesday 9AM-1PM
Tasks: Works as part of a team to keeps pantry shelves stocked in the pantry and the produce area in accordance with the guidelines and procedures identified during training. Help clean, evaluate spoiled foods. Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. repeatedly. Walk up and down stairs, lifting and reaching to a significant degree. Good communication.

Clean-up Crew
Time: Thursday 1pm-3 pm Fridays 9am-11am
Tasks: Help clean and organize the facility. Wipe down shelves, mop kitchen area floor, sweep basement, and clean walk in cooler. Discard old food products, organize food in freezers. Other cleaning duties may be assigned. Must be able to make decisions in accordance with the guidelines and procedures identified by the Food Pantry Coordinator. Attention to details, scrubbing, mopping, dusting and organizing. This position involves walking, sitting, lifting, standing, and reaching to a significant degree.

Food Pantry Appointment Scheduler
Time: Thursday 1PM-3PM, Friday 10AM-1PM
Tasks: Schedule food pantry appointments, answer incoming calls for Food Pantry and retrieve messages from voicemail/return calls. Must be able to operate phone and manage incoming calls, check voicemail, and return calls.

Location of work: Central office is in Ypsilanti near the corner of Huron and Michigan.
