Volunteer Position Description

Education Internship

Location: Tryon Creek State Natural Area: 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd
Commitment: minimum of 4 hour shifts per week (weekdays or weekends)
Compensation: unpaid
Supported by: Volunteer Coordinator, Amy Stout & Park Rangers on duty


WHO WE ARE

Friends of Tryon Creek is a nonprofit organization housed in the Nature Center of Tryon Creek State Natural Area, a 650-acre green space in southwest Portland. Our mission, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire and nurture relationships with nature in our unique urban forest. Since 1970, Friends of Tryon Creek has provided environmental education programs for all ages through its many camps, events and workshops, and restoration efforts.

Friends of Tryon Creek recognizes the diversity of races, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences of our whole community must be represented in our volunteer base in order to welcome and inspire all visitor. Therefore, we strongly encourage people of color as well as folks who are LBGTQ, multilingual, first-generation, or from other traditionally marginalized communities to join us in our efforts to reclaim, reconnect, and build authentic relationships with nature.

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITY OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM

Outreach Ambassador - Fridays & Saturdays

  • welcome all park visitors
  • share park information
  • build community
Junior Ranger Program Assistant - Sundays
  • Set up on-trail self-guided activities for kids ages 6-12
  • Support table activates for kids and families
Nature Center Volunteer - Every day of the week
  • welcome all park visitors
  • provide general park information
  • process store sale transactions
Story and Stroll Assistant - Fridays
  • Lead story, walk and craft activity for kids ages 2-6
  • Outlines, props and activities provided
Interpretative Table - Saturdays & Sundays
  • welcome all park visitors
  • Interpret natural information about the park to engage visitors
  • Outlines, props and activities provided

QUALIFICATIONS

  • No experience necessary, training and shadowing opportunities provided.
  • Enjoys working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a range of ages.
  • Interested in learning about Tryon natural history, programs, organizations etc.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for 4 hour shifts.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Completes background check and waiver
  • Completes an initial one-on-one training interview and attend intermittent trainings or events
