Welcome Friends - Long Island Cares Liaison

Welcome Friends (WF) is canvassing for a Long Island (LI) Cares Liaison to represent our three member Kitchens in this organization.

Founded by the late Harry Chapin, LI Cares brings together resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island. They deliver food to more than 580 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, day treatment facilities, senior nutrition sites and day care centers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. These agencies, in turn, distribute the food to their clients and/or serve meals from the food received. Welcome Friends (WF) is a member agency.

Liaison responsibilities include applying for annual grants to support our soup kitchens; training WF volunteers to order and pick up supplies and food; and overseeing the reporting and compliance with LI Cares requirements. The LI Cares Liaison is also a member of the Steering Committee. Please see job description for details.

Candidate qualities are being well organized and having good communications and computer skills.

Mission Statement

For over 30 years, our outstanding volunteers have addressed hunger in the Greater Port Jefferson and surrounding communities. Our soup kitchens have dynamic relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local government. Welcome Friends strives to ensure that our guests need not fear the loss of meals. We create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe, hospitable environment.

Description

Welcome Friends provides hot, nutritious meals four days a week in the Greater Port Jefferson community. We typically serve between 50 to 70 guests each night (3,000+ annually!). We are a 100% volunteer staffed organization, so every donation goes directly to serving our neighbors in need.

***We do not serve a meal on Thanksgiving or Christmas***
