Clear Blue Sea (CBSea) is a San Diego nonprofit startup dedicated to cleansing the oceans of plastic pollution through research and remediation. We have an extensive student internship program including over 80 participants to date. We have multiple engineering projects to build our marine robot prototype, the Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris, or FRED, as well as multiple research, social media, and website projects. Our Executive Management is performing strategic business activities, program management, as well as detailed daily administrative tasks. Our student projects include 4 marine robot prototyping projects; an environmental sciences policy project; a crowdfunding strategic planning project; and a Web/Social Media Enhancement Project.

We are looking for interns and volunteers: To plan and implement Clear Blue Sea’s Mataince and Warehouse program management functions under the direction of our Operation Manager who will provide specific roles and responsibilities defined in collaboration with the CBSea team. This internship spans the 2018-19 academic year and requires a minimum of 10 hours per week, which can be flexibly scheduled. This position is unpaid but available for academic credit depending on the school’s internship program.

The ideal intern will be able to provide strategic analyses, top-down planning, creative brainstorming, effective problem-solving, weekly tracking of project status and issues, and timely completion of an immediate Mataince and Warehouse supporting tasks.

Examples of Job Description: Industrial hygiene and safety Intern tasks include:

  • Advising and collaborating with management to resolve occupational health issues
  • Creating and executing studies to monitor and assess employees' exposure to health risks, and to measure the effectiveness of occupational health programs, policies, and procedures
  • Overseeing biological monitoring programs
  • Assessing and analyzing research data, summarizing statistics and compiling reports
  • Proposing and leading the implementation of programs to protect employee health, and implementing ergonomics
  • Conducting regular audits of programs
  • Ensure employee awareness of occupational health and safety concerns, programs and regulations by conducting training and presentations
  • Implementing corrective actions and suspending operations if required
  • Advising various parties on workers' compensation claims pertaining to workplace exposures
  • Maintaining current knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation
  • Assist in various tasks in support of on-site Office/Warehouse operations

Description

CLEAR BLUE SEA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in San Diego, CA with a mission to cleanse the oceans of plastic pollution. Clear Blue Sea’s innovative marine debris removal system is an unmanned, solar-powered Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris (FRED). Three small-scale FRED prototypes have been built and tested in Mission Bay and several new FRED projects are currently in work, including a FRED Do-it-Yourself (FREDDY) Instructional Package and the design of a 50-foot FRED to be implemented in Hawaii as a pilot. Our FRED projects have involved over 200 student interns as we are dedicated to training and mentoring younger generations in methods and innovations needed to increase awareness of ocean plastics and solutions for ocean cleanup and conservancy.
