Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives
A view of our historic buildings.

Join us for an immersive dive into 19th century Hawaiian History!
The Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site & Archives is a vibrant space, growing and changing to further address the extensive impact of the missionary presence on the Hawaiian Islands. Come learn with us!

WHEN: Docent Training will begin in early February 2020.
WHERE: HMH -- 553 South Kind Street, Honolulu, HI 96813
WHAT: The trainings are structured with lecture in the morning, a lunch break, and more hands on learning in the afternoon. It's relatively intensive, in no way do we expect our docents to know every nuance of our Site's history over the course of basic training, but trainees will be prepared to give a standard public tour with further learning opportunities in the future!

Mission Statement

The Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives preserves the heritage and interprets the stories of the American Protestant Missionaries, their descendants, and their relationships with the people and cultures of Hawai`i, connecting with contemporary life, and encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complex history that continues to shape Hawai`i. -Mission Statement, adopted 2010

Description

Mission Houses Museum was established in 1920 by the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society (HMCS), a non-profit educational institution and genealogical society. In 1974, the museum was granted full accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM).
Today, HMCS continues to gather genealogical data from descendants of the original Protestant missionary families who lived and worked in Hawai`i. Descendants are encouraged to explore their genealogies and to support Mission Houses Museum and the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society in preserving their heritage.
