Organization Name & Website: Little Tokyo Service Center at www.ltsc.org

Mission: The Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of social welfare and community development services to assist low income individuals and other persons in need, and to contribute to community revitalization and cultural preservation in Little Tokyo.

Opportunity: LTSC is looking for a motivated volunteer to lead our Senior Club! The Senior Club is a social group where senior residents in our low-income housing can share life updates, celebrate birthdays, go on outings, showcase their art skills, and contribute to community projects. As a volunteer with the Senior Club you will be coordinating with our staff to plan activities and facilitate club meetings once a month that promote mental health and wellness for our senior residents.

Activities can include: storytelling, guided exercises, arts & crafts projects, music, cooking, gardening, board games, field trips and more!

Impact: Seniors are especially vulnerable to social isolation and neglect from loss of family, health concerns, language barriers, and limited income. Many seniors we serve depend on surviving family members and other caregivers for their mental and physical wellness. Your efforts will engage our senior residents in meaningful conversations and allow them to practice their fine motor skills and creative thinking.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Engaging with senior residents during club activities.
  • Planning and facilitating activities to encourage socialization, mental stimulation & moderate physical exercise tailored for seniors.
  • Outreaching to resident seniors to encourage club attendance.
  • Track participation and supervise seniors during activities and outings.

Requirements:

We are looking for individuals who have:

  • Experience or would like to work with senior citizens.
  • Initiative in leading group activities.
  • Creativity & Teamwork.
  • Talents or hobbies to share.
  • Japanese or Spanish bilingual is a plus, but not required.

Time Commitment: The 1st Wednesday morning of each month. We are looking for a volunteer who will be able to commit to several months.

Additional Details:
Parking is provided on-location in a secure garage. A background check is required due to direct services provided to vulnerable populations. Staff will be present to offer support.

Professional Experience: This role will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in social work, mental health, senior services, applied arts, non-profits and community engagement.

If you would like to get involved, please contact the volunteer coordinator Michelle Wong at mdwong@ltsc.org.
