Become a Habitat Steward in Your Neighborhood!: Information Session

ORGANIZATION: EarthCorps

Tacoma Open Spaces Program: Information Session Tacoma’s urban forests and wetlands need your help! Recent studies show that Tacoma’s natural areas will lose significant forest area and native habitat within the next 20 years if we don’t act now! Urban forest decline is mostly due to invasive plants like blackberry and ivy. This impacts water quality, air quality, as well as the overall quality of our neighborhoods and open spaces. You can play a tremendous role in restoring Tacoma’s urban forests by becoming a Habitat Steward with EarthCorps and the City of Tacoma!

This information session is for anyone wanting to learn more about volunteering with our program as either an individual volunteer or on a deeper level as a habitat steward. The next opportunity to volunteer as a habitat steward will be for sites opening up in early 2020.

By becoming a Habitat Steward you will:

  • Learn to identify and remove aggressive weeds and plant native trees and shrubs;
  • Engage volunteers and lead ongoing volunteer events;
  • Strengthen the relationships in your neighborhood and community;
  • Improve the health of our urban forests and wetlands.

Come to this information session to learn about what EarthCorps and the City of Tacoma are doing to keep Tacoma’s urban forests and wetlands healthy, and how you can volunteer to become a habitat steward at one of the city’s open space sites. Directions Center for Urban Waters, 326 E D St, Tacoma, WA 98421. Commencement Bay Room North 101.

About EarthCorps:

EarthCorps is an independent nonprofit supported by donors and volunteers. Each year we work with over 10,000 volunteers at hundreds of events around the region to improve our forests, shorelines and salmon streams. We believe that involving the community through hands on work is the best way to keep our parks healthy.

The Work We Do:

While the exact tasks at hand vary, our projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors.

In order to help create healthy forests, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season.
