Our volunteers live in places where there is deep suffering (slums and inner-city neighborhoods) to offer their unconditional friendship and comforting presence. Con-solatio houses are nestled in some of the poorest neighborhoods in big cities around the globe, and it is there that our volunteers immerse themselves in the culture and in the hearts of the people they serve. By offering comfort and hope through relationships built on mutual respect and trust, and by being a bridge with local organizations, our volunteers want to rebuild a sense of dignity in each person - especially the elderly, the children, the handicapped, the forsaken. Apart from time spent with those in their neighborhoods, volunteers also regularly visit places of great distress such as jails, orphanages, and hospitals. Through personal relationships with the people, volunteers are further able to act as a valuable link between their needs and the appropriate resources, such as public assistance and rehabilitation centers. Grounded in an intense prayer life and supported by an international community of fellow volunteers, Con-solatio missionaries seek, above all, to emulate Mary's compassion and consolation at the foot of the Cross of Jesus.

Living Arrangements: Each of our homes is an intentional community of 4-7 young people from different nationalities who live in the neighborhood they serve. They seek to live a simple lifestyle, as close as possible to their friends and neighbors.

Training: Training begins with a "Come & See" weekend at Con-solatio in Brooklyn, NY - this is a time of mutual discernment to confirm a call to be sent in mission. Before leaving on mission, we have an orientation - a two week intensive preparation for life in your mission country. During mission, each community has ongoing spiritual and cultural formation with the staff member assigned to serve that country. Following mission, there is a "Re-entry" weekend retreat, during which we offer the tools necessary for re-integrating into your home country.
