CHEER is an innovative and growing community based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/Takoma Park community. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals
Communications are for people in the Long Branch and Takoma Park communities, and adjacent zip codes, in lower Montgomery County, Maryland, Applicants from this area are needed, or close by locations in Maryland
Description of Activities
The volunteer assists the executive director and administrative manager in developing and implementing the CHEER marketing plan. This includes:
* programming the CHEER website, managing posts on the CHEER Facebook page and using multiple social media methods to promote CHEER
* drafting blogs on program activities
* writing and distributing a monthly newsletter
* giving input on the CHEER marketing plan
Impact of Communications Assistant
Describing CHEER’s mission and activities clearly results in better understanding for clients and the general public. As a result, more people take advantage of CHEER programs, become more engaged in the community CHEER serves, and become involved with CHEER. The volunteer will also be able to improve internal CHEER communication
Background/Experience Needed
* good, clear writer able to take input from staff and prepare clear and understandable articles and postings for staff, volunteers, stakeholders, clients and the broader community
* experience in programming a website
* previous experience managing a Facebook page
* experience working collaboratively with staff to prepare communications media
* creativity using social media is invited
* willingness to give input on broader communications goals and strategies
* graphic skills to help CHEER marketing plan
Time Commitment and Volunteer Location
Time can be negotiated. Activities may be done at home, the CHEER office or at CHEER sponsored events

The Mission of CHEER is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy thriving communities. CHEER does this by offering a community driven process for identifying community vision and goals and gathering the information and resources needed to measure and fulfill them.
Description
CHEER promotes civic participation in the Takoma Park and Long Branch community. We provide a framework for community improvement and provide training and support for people to participate, especially among those who are under represented and under served.
We help the Takoma Park and Long Branch community fulfill their goals:
Economic Opportunity
- Connect community members to resources that bring economic opportunity to all
- Support community friendly business development and local entrepreneurship
Reducing Health Disparities
- Connect community members to health care and wellness activities
- Inventory community health assets & gaps
- Coordinate the Health Enterprise Zone, a coalition of local healthcare providers
Housing
- Assess housing affordability
- Facilitate neighborhood improvement efforts
- Develop residents’ leadership skills
Community Connections
- Organize events to connect people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities
Children, Youth and Families
- Participate in Takoma Park Youth Collaborative to develop and conduct programs that support youth to successfully transition to adulthood
