Volunteers will complete one 2-hr class covering policies and procedures and two 3-hr shifts shadowing an experienced feeder for hands-on training. Nursery volunteers need to be able to commit to one 3-hr shift per week; at this time. *Please note, our Nursery is not located at TLAC, but in the Tarrytown Center off Windsor and Exposition. You will receive directions and the address once scheduled for a training. Other notes about bottle baby volunteers: 1) Neonatal training will consist of a classroom introduction to team policies and procedures and a feeding demonstration. Class is followed by two full shifts shadowing an experienced feeder for hands-on training that you will schedule from the training calendar once you have completed class. All training for the Neonatal Program must be completed within 30 days. If you have other commitments that might prevent you from completing the training on time, please consider that when choosing your first class date. If training is not completed within 30 days, you will have to sign up for training again at a later date. 2) All volunteers must commit to a minimum of one recurring 3-hour shift each week. Our team works almost 24/7 during the season and we must have reliable, consistent shift coverage to assure our kittens are fed and cared for adequately. You can choose whatever time/day works best for you. You may need to cancel or change a shift occasionally, but a recurring shift selection is required. 3) The age requirement to be on our team is 18 years of age. 4) You need to be able to have full range of motion, able to use a step stool and reach above your head, and able to get down on all fours and reach into a kennel.

About Austin Pets Alive!

Location:

Town Lake Animal Center, 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX 78703, US

Mission Statement

To keep Austin a no-kill city by serving as the safety net to the city shelter's animals that would otherwise be killed, saving the most medically and behaviorally challenged pets.

Description

Please visit our website listed if interested in volunteering!

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is a 501(c) 3 (nonprofit) organization run almost exclusively by dedicated volunteers.

We are implementing innovative and progressive programs in Austin and Central Texas after studying the best practices of other cities who are no-kill or are in the process of becoming no-kill.

We have created our own "road map" that uses a lot of experience from many different places as well as incorporating the unique characteristics of the Austin area. Austin is rich in prevention resources such as spay/neuter, compared to other cities, and we are filling the gaps in service areas that have been historically under-represented, such as high volume, high quality adoption.

We are currently focused on helping the healthy and treatable pets who are at risk of being killed in a shelter, by rescuing the pets who are at the greatest risk and helping owners who are having problems so great that they need to surrender their pet(s) to a shelter.

In our rescue program, to not duplicate work of other agencies, we focus solely on the pets who have already been passed over by other groups and the shelters’ adoption programs and only take the healthy and treatable pets who are about to be killed and have no other options.
