Quick Overview: Step Up is seeking an interior design consultant to help us create a new open-plan workspace for our growing field staff offices in the Los Angeles area.

Mission or Broader Program Description: Step Up is a nationally recognized non-profit provider of permanent supportive housing, vocational opportunities, and member-driven supportive services for individuals experiencing mental health conditions and long term homelessness. Step Up has a staff of almost 220 people serving Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Step Up Los Angeles has 9 housing projects serving members throughout Santa Monica, Hollywood and the VA in West Los Angeles, as well as numerous field-based staff offices.
Step Up's mission is to deliver compassionate support to people experiencing serious mental illness to help them recover, stabilize, and integrate into the community. Through dynamic partnerships, Step Up provides positive social and learning environments, vocational training, permanent supportive housing opportunities, and recovery services to empower individuals to cultivate lives of hope and dignity. Step Up exercises innovative leadership and advocacy to increase public understanding, support and acceptance of all people living with mental illness.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities:The volunteer will help Step Up staff improve their overall working environment by helping envision and design a plan that includes tables and work stations, in place of individual desks. By working on this office design with staff, the volunteer will help increase the number of flexible work stations and create a cleaner, more efficient space. The volunteer’s actions will enhance our core value of collaborative relationships by supporting staff partnerships to share resources knowledge and experiences.

  • Brainstorming design ideas and research for inspiration
  • Designing preliminary concepts, design plans, all design elements within the client's scope of work
  • Creating floor plans, elevations, space planning using AutoCAD
  • Creating color palettes
  • Specifying materials and furnishings
  • Ordering materials and furnishings to be purchased by the client.
  • Following up with the client to ensure design specifications have been met.

Requirements:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and general office experience (preferred)
  • Office space planning
  • Office furniture knowledge
  • Color knowledge
  • Organized, detail oriented, and ability to multi-task
  • Works well with the team

OUR IMPACT

Tens of thousands of committed volunteers together with thousands of civic, nonprofit, and business partners have enabled L.A. Works to make a significant, visible, and lasting contribution to Los Angeles.

Since 1991, L.A. Works has mobilized and led volunteers to contribute over a million hours to Los Angeles through unique volunteer programming, which has included:

  • Serving meals and preparing emergency food provisions for over 425,000 homeless and low-income individuals;
  • Providing educational and enrichment activities for over 65,000 disadvantaged youth;
  • Revitalizing schools, parks, and community centers for more than 200,000 volunteer hours;
  • Offering companionship to seniors and friendship to abused and homeless women for more than 20,000 volunteer hours;
  • Conserving, cleaning, and restoring urban and natural environments in and around Los Angeles for more than 75,000 volunteer hours;
  • Caring for animals in shelters and sanctuaries at over 1,200 volunteer projects; and
  • Training more than 900 Angelenos in the project and volunteer management.
