The Morehouse College Community Revitalization Initiative (MCCRI) and the AmeriCorps VISTA program are seeking to recruit committed mentors for our StrongStart Reading Program at M. Agnes Jones Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year. The program is on Tuesdays from 3pm-4pm weekly.

So how does the program work? Our mentors attend the school that he/she commits to for one hour, one day, a week. (You are welcome to attend more sessions if you like at different schools on different days). The goal is to assist elementary school students in reading on grade level. The commitment will help to build rapport and friendship or mentorship with the student who may not receive that attention at home.

It also helps the students build confidence by knowing someone cares enough to spend time with them and thereby cares about their success. If you have one hour a week and would love to be a mentor then this opportunity is for you!!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Youth Entrepreneurship Club is to develop in students the passion and skills necessary to succeed in the marketplace and in life by stimulating economic thinking skills, encouraging creative intelligent risk-taking, providing practical business experience and instilling independence and personal responsibility. We hope to open doors, open minds, and open awareness to the great set of potential rewards associated with business ownership. Participating youth will enhance their skills and increase their entrepreneurial knowledge thereby gaining a clear understanding and impact of entrepreneurship in the development of their communities. Students will be encouraged to think creatively, turn ideas into action, or develop innovations for an existing business.

Description

The Morehouse College Community Revitalization Initiative (MCCRI) is requesting mentors who specialize in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The MCCRI developed a Youth Entrepreneurship Club in a middle school in our community. This school year we will be expanding to two more middle schools and we would love to have mentors come speak with the kids about their professions, participate in classroom activities, and help with preparing the student for their Innovation Competition in April of 2014. The goal of the YEC is to develop entrepreneurial skills in students by nurturing creativity, problem solving, business skills, and innovation. As well as the ability to communicate new ideas, to work as teams, make presentations, and help prepare youth for college through work and leadership. The commitment will be one Wednesday and Saturday a month and will start in October of 2013 through April 2014.

As a mentor you will help prepare the kids for their Innovation Competition in April 2014.
