Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer in the planetarium at the Eugene Science Center! Planetarium volunteers get an opportunity to present astronomy and science based planetarium shows to audiences of mostly kids and their families or teachers. Ideal candidates are comfortable speaking in front of a large audience and also tech-savvy, but these are not requirements! We are happy to work with you to develop these skills. In the planetarium, we offer two types of shows - prerecorded and live.
Prerecorded shows are films that are formatted for the dome. These are a cinch to run, and essentially just involve pushing "play" and then sitting back while the show plays.
Live shows are presented live by staff/volunteers. These are more involved to run, but can be a lot of fun.
Regardless of the type of show, volunteering in the planetarium involves the following primary tasks: -collecting tickets at the entryway to the planetarium hallway -checking in with the front desk staff to see how many tickets have been sold
-welcoming audience and introducing show -running the show
-thanking the audience at the end of the show, and answering audience questions (optional) And may occasionally involve these tasks: -collecting items left behind in planetarium and bringing them to lost and found -booting up/shutting down planetarium equipment if it's the beginning or end of the day
In general, there is flexibility with the level of commitment in volunteering in the planetarium, depending on the time of year. During the school year, we offer public planetarium shows throughout much of the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During the summer we offer public shows everyday of the week. We also have field trips that visit the planetarium throughout the year.
