FRESHFARM promotes sustainable agriculture and improves food access and equity in the Mid-Atlantic Region. We do this by operating producer-only farmers markets in DC, MD, and VA that provide vital economic opportunities to local farmers and food producers and through innovative outreach programs that educate the public about food and related environmental issues.

Farmers markets are an essential part of FRESHFARM's effort to support local food systems. If you have a passion to support local agriculture, the environment, or are simply just passionate about meeting new people, try volunteering at your local farmers market! Opportunities available in DC, MD, or VA.

Volunteers in this role help with set up and tear down of any physical equipment for the market prior to opening (i.e. tents, tables, etc.). This might also involve helping vendors set up so that everyone is ready to go once market starts, or helping vendors tear down so that everyone can depart on time. Having volunteers in this role is enormously helpful in making sure the market runs smoothly and market managers are enormously grateful for the extra support. Please note that this role does require the ability to lift at least 20-30 lbs.

About FRESHFARM Markets

P.O. Box 15691, Washington, DC 20003, US

Mission Statement

FRESHFARM Markets strives to build and strengthen the local food movement in the Chesapeake Bay region. We use our markets to create vibrant urban and community places, to provide economic opportunities for farmers and to showcase our region's agricultural bounty. We aim to create a sustainable urban-rural partnership that brings the blessings of healthy local food to our communities and sustains the working landscapes that feed us.

FRESHFARM Markets operates producer-only farmers' markets in the Washington, DC Metro area and Maryland. All foods and products sold in our markets come directly from local and regional producers within the Chesapeake Bay region.

FRESHFARM Markets began as a program in the Public Education Division of American Farmland Trust. In May 2002, we incorporated as an independent, nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, and received 501(c)3 status. In 1997, the first FRESHFARM market was opened in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC, and in 1998, a second market was opened in St. Michaels, MD. The Dupont Circle market has expanded from a customer base of 21,000 to more than 100,000 and has been named by The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times of London as one of the top farmers' markets in the country.

In 2003, a new market was added in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, DC. In 2004, a market opened at H Street NE. And in 2005, new markets opened in Foggy Bottom and Silver Spring, MD. In June of 2006, a farmstand, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, was created in Camp Springs, MD.
