FRESHFARM promotes sustainable agriculture and improves food access and equity in the Mid-Atlantic Region. We do this by operating producer-only farmers markets in DC, MD, and VA that provide vital economic opportunities to local farmers and food producers and through innovative outreach programs that educate the public about food and related environmental issues.

Farmers markets are an essential part of FRESHFARM's effort to support local food systems. If you have a passion to support local agriculture, the environment, or are simply just passionate about meeting new people, try volunteering at your local farmers market! Opportunities available in DC, MD, or VA.

Volunteers in this role help with set up and tear down of any physical equipment for the market prior to opening (i.e. tents, tables, etc.). This might also involve helping vendors set up so that everyone is ready to go once market starts, or helping vendors tear down so that everyone can depart on time. Having volunteers in this role is enormously helpful in making sure the market runs smoothly and market managers are enormously grateful for the extra support. Please note that this role does require the ability to lift at least 20-30 lbs.

About FRESHFARM Markets

Location:

655 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001, US

Mission Statement

FRESHFARM is a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agriculture and improves food access, education, and equity in the Mid-Atlantic region. We operate producer-only farmers markets that provide vital economic opportunities to local farmers and food producers, pioneering food distribution programs that increase food access for low-income neighborhoods, and innovative food education programs that build healthier communities.

Description

Our founders Bernadine Prince and Ann Harvey Yonkers launched FRESHFARM as a public education program of the American Farmland Trust in 1996. The next year, on July 4, 1997, they opened the Dupont Circle farmers market in Washington, DC with 15 farmers from four states selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants.

In 2019 Hugo Mogollon joined FRESHFARM as executive director. As part of Hugo’s new leadership of the organization, FRESHFARM merged with Community Foodworks, a peer organization which Hugo had led for 5 years, to become the largest farmers market organization in the Mid-Atlantic. Through this merger, FRESHFARM’s capacity has expanded significantly, and we aim to increase access for our community to fresh, local foods, expand food education, and transform our regional food system.
