Help Grow Vegetables for our Food Pantry

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities Service Center

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 3 people are interested

As part of our efforts to feed the hungry, we maintain a vegetable garden on-site that provides fresh vegetables to distribute through our food pantry to the homeless and needy. We need caring volunteers who enjoy gardening and outdoor work to help us with garden preparation, planting, maintenance and (the payoff) harvesting produce. All of the produce is distributed through the pantry and provides a welcome supplement to the canned and packaged goods our clients receive.

Training and guidance provided.
Our garden is managed by a professional gardener from the Illinois Agricultural Extension Service, so curious volunteers can get free advice and have all of their own gardening questions answered.

Some lifting and moving involved.

Days and hours are flexible during the growing season, roughly from May to October. We'll work with your schedule.

Help us help the needy.
Thank you.

Mission Statement

Catholic Charities fulfills the Church’s role in the mission of charity to anyone in need by providing compassionate, competent and professional services that strengthen and support individuals, families and communities based on the value and dignity of human life. In order to remain faithful to our mission, Catholic Charities is guided by these core values: Respect, Compassion, Competence and Stewardship.

Description

Catholic Charities began in 1917, when a group of Catholic businessmen petitioned Cardinal Mundelein to create a central Catholic charity in Chicago to relieve the burden on Catholic parishes, which were struggling to meet the needs of the poor in their communities. World War I had just ended, the Spanish Influenza Epidemic was sweeping the globe, and immigrants were arriving daily in a city growing by leaps and bounds. The organization was chartered in January 1918, and Cardinal Mundelein addressed the 200 board members at their first annual meeting in April of the following year. He reported on the agency’s immediate success in raising funds and serving the poor.
