General Maintenance and Landscaping Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: VERNER

Purpose: This position will support Verner’s mission of delivering high-quality early childhood education by enhancing the quality and safety of Verner’s environments. By maintaining the appearance and integrity of Verner spaces and structures, the maintenance and landscaping volunteer will improve the vibrancy and longevity of Verner as a quality early education institution for years to come. This position is perfect for individuals who enjoy working with their hands, being on their feet, and consider themselves serious DIYers.

Results: This position, under the guidance of Verner’s Volunteer Coordinator and Maintenance Coordinator, will perform light maintenance and landscaping tasks in spaces of learning, play and work. In doing so, the volunteer will build capacity and efficiency in the day to day performance at Verner.

Suggested Activities:

  • Light painting
  • Light carpentry (eg. handrails, playground structures, decks, fencing)
  • Landscaping (eg.mulching, moving dirt and sand)
  • Cleaning gutters
  • Trail maintenance and pruning
  • Power tool use - depending on experience

Qualifications:

    • Serious "do-it-yourself’er," experience with home projects OR industry professional
    • Attention to detail
    • Comfortable working outdoors
    • Takes direction well
    • Physical ability to spend 2-6 hours a week on your feet on uneven terrain and move frequently from standing to kneeling,
  • Preferred qualifications: Experience with power tools, able to provide own PPE, and experience managing small groups

Verner is a nonprofit providing high quality, affordable early care and education to children six weeks to five years old in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The organization provides 5-star comprehensive care and education to almost 200 children and their families at two centers in Asheville and Candler, NC and through a home-based Early Head Start program. We also provide families supportive services and programs such as Mothers on the Move, Rainbow In My Tummy(r) and trained staff provide individualized case management to families in crisis. We were founded to ensure that all children have access to high quality affordable care. Our blended program accepts vouchers, as well as private pay families. Verner is also an Early Head Start provider and North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten provider.
