ORGANIZATION: AREA SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNCIL

  • Tasks:
    • Work directly with the Director of CD+ to ensure a safe, yet entertaining environment for patients
    • Assist with patients and other staff with free time
    • Provide patients with reading skills
    • Give patients someone to confide in
    • Provide patients with appropriate talk of life skills
  • Purpose:
    • This will give us a better understanding on how to work with our patients
    • The patients will be entertained during their free time in an educational way
    • This will make sure that patients get the education they need in regards to reading
    • To give you a chance to make a difference in our patient’s lives
  • Results:
    • This position will increase the amount of care for our patients in CD+ as well as provide them with a way to cope with the hardships they are going through. It will help save lives, bring awareness, and even comfort the families of the patients knowing they are being cared for in a loving way. Also, giving ASAC a chance to support patients, and allow individuals to get the treatment that they need by reducing stigma and worry about the world around them.
  • Suggested activities:
    • "Tea Time" circle to drink tea and chat about life
    • Book Club to teach the patients an easy yet educational coping mechanism
    • Assist patients with homework
    • Be a leader and help guide patients in a healthy direction
  • Measures:
    • We will measure the success of this position by measuring how well our patients respond to the given activities and how well our patients attend these activities.
  • Qualifications:
    • A high school diploma or equivalent
    • 21+ years of age
    • Patient Support
    • Communication Skills
    • Basic knowledge of Substance Use Disorders
    • Fingerprint and background check performed by the department of human services
  • Time frame:
    • A commitment of three months in required
    • 2-4 hours per week
    • Times: Any afternoons; Wednesday’s in afternoon, but can be flexible
      • Need weekend activities
    • Site:
      • CD+ at 3601 16 th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids IA 52404
    • Supervision:
      • This position is supervised by the Director of CD+ on the main campus. The volunteer will also work closely with staff, including teachers and leaders, to focus on our patients safety and maintaining an entertaining environment
    • Benefits/Support Provided:
      • Volunteer hours toward state programs, such as school
      • Attend professional trainings where certification is provided
      • Learn how to help those with Substance Use Disorders
      • A letter of support from the director
      • Facilitating groups and implementing pieces of education to children
      • Learn about treatment in the community

About ASAC

Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) is a private nonprofit corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Formed in 1962, ASAC is one of the most comprehensive substance use disorder prevention and treatment agencies in the state of Iowa. Our service area primarily serves Linn, Benton, Jones, Jackson and Clinton counties as well as patients from across Iowa.

What We Do

ASAC is licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Division of Behavioral Health, to address substance use disorders. Our services follow the continuum of care beginning with Prevention and Intervention moving through the various levels of Treatment.
