Veterans and active duty volunteers have a unique perspective gained from their military experience, and as such, they are able to provide understanding and camaraderie to our veteran patients. As a Level 4 Participant in the "We Honor Veterans Program," we strive to serve the unique needs of our veteran patients. We do this through our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer visits, as well as community education programs that focus on the special needs of veterans at end of life.

Compassus is a community-based hospice; as part of our team, you will travel to skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, and/or private homes throughout northern Virginia. Assignments will be kept close to your home or work and hours are flexible, based on your availability. We simply ask you to commit to several hours each week for at least one year. A background check, TB test and attendance at orientation are required and provided. Whether you have had a personal experience with hospice, feel a calling, or want to add greater meaning to your life.... we would love to hear from you!

Mission Statement

Compassus is dedicated to excellence, compassionate care, and providing comfort and support to patients and their families. Our services, including home health, palliative and hospice care, are centered on improving the quality of life for our patients and their families. We deliver personalized care that puts our patients’ goals and preferences at the forefront of their individual care plan, regardless of their condition. For those patients and families in our hospice program we assure that their end-of-life physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs are met. Our colleagues are committed to serving patients and their families with heartfelt compassion.

Our volunteers support patients and families in many ways. They provide companionship to include: 1 to 1 social interaction; listening to and reading to patients; sharing photos, stories or memories; playing an instrument for or listening to music with patients; helping patients to write letters; providing caregiver support.

Additionally, special programs for patient support include: conducting a Life Review, interviewing patients about life history and creating a DVD or journal keepsake for families; providing 11th Hour support, sitting by the bedside of actively dying patients; providing Pet Therapy by bringing your certified pet to visit patients; Providing Veteran to Veteran companion visits and support to our Veteran patients; supporting our office staff by filing, sorting, mailings and performing various administrative tasks; supporting our Bereavement Program which includes monthly phone calls to families or friends after the passing of their loved one.
