Stanford Powwow Traffic & Security

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: T E N A COUNCIL

We begin our opportunity on Friday afternoon at noon setting up camp, then about 3pm we begin traffic control. Traffic control consists of guiding visitors to this event into assigned parking lots. Friday, there are approximately 3 parking areas we manage. Friday will close at 11pm. Saturday we begin at 10am, manning 3 parking areas. There are approximately 6 people needed at the main visitor parking lot, 4 needed at the dance/elder gate, 6 to 10 needed at the "overflow" parking. All are guiding people into parking spaces. During the nite, we manage the camp ground to ensure there are no drinking. If anyone on our crew sees drinking, they are to alert the leaders of the crew and we will remove the people drinking. We also work in conjunction with the campus police and local sheriff dept. Saturday runs until 11pm. Sunday morning is similar to the Saturday schedule, and it ends at 10pm. For the most part we are looking for flexible people that at a moments notice can move to another parking area if needed. We also need people that can stand/sit in one place for hours at a time, as the cars are coming in. We do feed our volunteers and if needed, they are welcome to camp with us. We encourage people to be patient, be able to control situations that may need a calm and guiding voice of leadership, and who works well with authority.

Mission Statement

To bring people together in a spiritual way of sovereign, benevolence indigenous to the Americas. To create survival skills in a natural and ecological way as our ancestors of Native American decent. To acquire land for the purpose of building a Spiritual Village from monies obtained through donations and/or personal gifts, fund raisers, and investments made by the Council. To walk in the way of our Creator, with the trees, the singed people and all that is life (known to our people as the Red Road) and/or Pulblic Law 95-341 American Indian Religious Freedom. To protect the spiritual right of the traditional Native American way of life.

Description

TENA Council has been in existence since the 1980's. We hold Native American ceremonies to bring people of all Nations together in a peaceful way. One way we practice this is by having an event called the Honoring of the Elders Gathering, held annually. We are all volunteers and none of us get paid to put this event on. To financially supplement this event we do security and traffic control at the Stanford Powwow held in Palo Alto on Mother's Day weekend. This event pays us and in turn we use this money for the Honoring of the Elders Gathering, which covers at least half of our budget. We need volunteers for this Stanford Powwow, as it is a 3 day event. Our Council also holds bi-monthly sweat ceremonies.
