Join a dynamic team that is helping the Botanical Garden become one of the most beautiful attractions in Iowa! Volunteers are essential to our success and help carry out our mission: exploring, explaining and celebrating the world of plants.
Outdoor garden maintenance volunteers will be trained by horticulture staff to work with a specific garden or gardens to develop their knowledge of the plant material and maintenance needs.
Volunteers will weed, remove debris, provide general plant maintenance and plant new plants and bulbs as directed by horticulture staff.
Hillside Garden: We are looking for 1-2 volunteers to join our Hillside Garden team on Monday mornings from Spring to Fall (approx. 8:30-10:30AM). Expected commitment is 2-3 hours per week. volunteers should be comfortable working on a non-level terrain. Parking Lot & Education Gardens: This volunteer team works with the maintenance of parking lot gardens and a nearby bed used with the summer camp program. Activities include weeding, picking up unwanted debris, general maintenance of plants as well as adding plants and bulbs. These gardens welcome our visitors and provide an important first impression of the Botanical Garden. We are looking for 1-2 volunteers to join this team on Thursday mornings from Spring to Fall (approx. 8:30-10:30AM). Expected commitment is 2-3 hours per week.
Water Garden: Volunteers will weed surrounding areas, manage algae and may help move plants in/out of water. Possibility of getting wet. We are looking for 2 volunteers to join our water garden team on Wednesday mornings from Spring to Fall (approx. 8:30-10:30AM). Expected commitment is 2-3 hours per week. - Interest in or experience gardening. Gloves and tools provided. Outdoor work - must dress for conditions. Bending and ability to lift up to 20 pounds helpful.
