Veterans Serving Veterans in Hospice Care

ORGANIZATION: Altus Hospice of the Hills

Altus Hospice is a part of We Honor Veterans, a national organization that helps train and educate hospice staff and patients to ensure the best care possible for veterans.

We are looking for veterans who are willing to meet with patients and allow them to share about their service. For many veterans this experience is extremely beneficial and helps close this chapter. The experiences that came through their sacrifice to serve our country is something you can understand uniquely as a veteran yourself.

As a veteran approaches end of life it can be meaningful to be welcomed home, thanked for their service, and most importantly have a secure place to share with military brother (or sister) who can better relate to their time in the armed forces.

We will be happy to train you in how to relate to a hospice patient, and how giving a small amount of time, even once or twice a month will have a huge impact to another veteran and their family.

Feel free to get in contact directly with our Volunteer Coordinator-Jessica Santos jsantos@altushospicecare.com

Mission Statement

The Mission of Altus Hospice is to provide professional care with a personal touch. We accomplish this by focusing on both the patient and their family. We will treat the disease process with medical expertise while emphasizing quality living, not only physically, but also psychosocially, emotionally and spiritually. Comfort, compassion and calming presence are the gifts we bring to this service, and we are honored to walk with the patient and loved ones through this special time.

Description

Altus has the honor and privilege to partner with patients and families as they enter into end of life care.

Hospice is a concept of caring, rather than a specific location. In hospice care, the emphasis is on palliative (comfort) care and quality of life. Every effort is made to make the patient as comfortable as possible and fulfill the distinct wishes of the patient and their family. There is practical, emotional, and spiritual support available for all involved.
