Mentors support the work of Atlanta GLOW by coaching and encouraging Atlanta GLOW participants, while modeling effective management and leadership skills and providing connections to professional networks. Mentors will report to the Mentoring Program Coordinator, who will report directly to Atlanta GLOW’s Executive Director (ED). Mentors' responsibilities include:
- Maintaining knowledge of the organization and a personal commitment to its goals and objectives
- Emailing or Calling their Mentees Once a Week
- Meeting Face-to-Face with their Mentees Once a Month for 6 Months
- Facilitating Connections between their Mentees and Professional Networks
- Encouraging their Mentees in their Pursuit of Educational and Career Goals
- Maintaining Confidentiality where Appropriate
- A Background Check ($25 Background Check fee applies)
- Receiving Regular Correspondence from Atlanta GLOW about Suggested Discussion Topics
Terms and Participation
Mentors can expect to spend 2-4 hours a month (approximately .5-1 hour a week) on formal and informal mentoring activities.
Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Atlanta GLOW’s mission and who has a natural affinity for inspiring and motivating youth, strategic planning, one-on-one coaching and a heart for service.
Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:
- An Atlanta resident, can easily commute to/from the metro Atlanta area (particularly Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton, Rockdale and Gwinnett counties)
- Has earned at least a HS Diploma or GED
- Be at least moderate-income (individual or household income); women working in high paying industries are preferred (ex. law, corporate, business)
- Must be a mature, professional woman 21 years or older (ideally retirees, or women with 10+ years of professional experience)
- Business owners, or entrepreneurs, and women working in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medical fields) are preferred
- The ability and desire to work with young adults (14-25)
- The passion to see young women succeed in leadership
- A positive attitude and good listening skills
- Patience, understanding, and a sense of humor
- The ability to be transparent and open in conversation
- Experience working with people from diverse urban backgrounds
- The willingness to share knowledge and personal experiences
- Good time management skills and the ability to manage one's own time
- Knowledge of the Atlanta youth community and an understanding of youth perspectives, trends, and motivators
- A commitment being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations
- A commitment to participating in the program for at least 6 months
- The ability to coach and inspire others to complete coals and think strategically
- A commitment to and understanding of Atlanta GLOW’s beneficiaries
- A resourceful individual and trusted professional with strong business networks
- Personal qualities of spirituality, integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of others
