34 th Annual AIDS Walk & Run Boston
Sunday, June 2, 2019

On Sunday, June 2, 2019, community members and teams and will come together in support of AIDS Walk & Run Boston and Wellness Festival, New England’s largest HIV/AIDS community fundraising and public awareness event. Each year, people across Massachusetts and beyond sign up to raise money for the programs and services of AIDS Action Committee, as well as start conversations with friends and family about HIV prevention, care, and advocacy.

Many of the people who seek services at AAC have more pressing, immediate priorities than managing their HIV status, including homelessness, malnutrition, substance abuse, or domestic violence. That is why, in addition to HIV counseling and testing, AAC provides services in housing assistance and legal support. AAC also operates the second largest needle exchange and education program, Access, in the state, providing safe needles and reversing hundreds of potentially fatal overdoses a year through our opioid overdose prevention trainings and distribution of Narcan.

AIDS Action Committee’s Youth on Fire program works to link homeless youth to HIV and STI tests, primary health care providers, mental health clinicians, substance abuse programs, shelter, and other critical services. Now Youth on Fire has moved to a new space that has beds for people who need a safe place to sleep.

Young adults experiencing homelessness face discrimination, hunger, isolation, abuse, and more every day. The youth who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Queer are considered the most vulnerable group in Massachusetts.

Today, we have the tools to support those living with HIV/AIDS and to stop the epidemic. Together, we can get to ZERO: zero new infections, zero discrimination, and zero deaths from HIV/AIDS.

About AIDS Action Committee

Mission Statement

The mission of AIDS Action Committee is to stop the AIDS epidemic and related health inequities by eliminating new infections, maximizing healthier outcomes of those infected and at risk, and attacking the root causes of HIV/AIDS.

Description

AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS, advocating at the city, state, and federal levels for fair and effective AIDS policies, conducting cutting edge HIV preventionprograms, and providing health and wellness services to people already living with HIV. Founded in 1983, AIDS Action is New England’s largest AIDS service organization.

Our work - in conjunction with partners around the state - has given Massachusetts one of the best track records in tackling this epidemic.

Since 1999, we’ve seen a 53% reduction in new HIV diagnoses in Massachusetts, which has meant that over 5,000 people who might otherwise have become HIV positive have remained negative, and the state will save more than $2 billion in health care costs.

We go beyond the basics of providing safer sex kits and HIV meds and take a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention and care. We work face to face with the people most impacted by HIV. We understand their complex needs and how these needs impact their health, and we channel this information to public officials and politicians who make life-changing policy and funding decisions.

At present, we work directly with one-in-six people diagnosed with HIV in our state, and provide prevention services to thousands more. Expanding on our successful model, we’re also taking the fight to infections and diseases related to HIV, like Hepatitis C.
