Family Building Events Volunteer

Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) provides affordable housing and services for low-income people in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco, to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources. Please check us out at www.tndc.org.

Position Summary

The position is a Family Building Events Volunteer. This is a position for individuals with a passion for equity, diversity and integrity. You will be supervised by Karina Sweitzer, the Social Worker Site Supervisor of 1036 Mission. 1036 Mission is a new Family Building in the SOMA district with 83 units and houses about 200 formerly homeless and very low-income tenants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Family Building Events Volunteer will assist the staff of 1036 Mission in their monthly or bi-monthly programming. The events will most likely take place 4:00-7:00pm on Mondays or Wednesdays.

  • Set up seating, food, and supplies for events.
  • Serving food and drinks to tenants
  • Participating in, supporting with, and potentially leading an activity (crafts, bingo etc)
  • Playing with children.

Basic Qualifications

  • Strong interest in one or more of the following areas: community development, events, equity, childcare.
  • Be culturally sensitive. We treat all people with respect and believe that different experiences and perspectives add value.
  • Comfortable being around children and holding healthy boundaries (no time spent alone, away from the parents). Ability to communicate if they hear or witness any concerns regarding the safety of children.

Required Characteristics

  • We need someone who is passionate about making a change and improving lives.
  • Team Player. Must be able to work well with others and coordinate tasks with good and clear communication.
  • This leadership role must be able to listen, understand the project's needs, challenges, opportunities, etc.
  • Ability to perform light to medium work involving sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 25 pounds and climbing stairs.

This position is volunteer-based and is uncompensated. There is a commitment of 2-4 hours a week, from 4:00-7:00 pm on Mondays or Wednesdays, twice a month.

Founded in 1981, the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) currently owns 32 buildings and houses over 3,000 San Franciscans--primarily people who earn $5,000 to $25,000 a year. Serving the Tenderloin and central-city neighborhoods, TNDC also provides support services, including social workers and the Tenderloin After-School Program, a drop-in center for neighborhood children.
