Transforming Conflict: Alternatives to Violence Project Basic Workshop

ORGANIZATION: ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT CALIFORNIA

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

For over 40 years the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) has created peace in prisons and communities. Our workshops draw upon the shared experience of participants using interactive exercises, discussions, games and role-plays to examine the ways we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration and anger can lead to emotional and/or physical violence.

An AVP workshop can help you to:

  • manage uncomfortable feelings such as anger and fear
  • deal more effectively with risk and threatening situations
  • build community based upon honesty, respect, and caring
  • communicate constructively in difficult situations
  • recognise the conflict management skills you already have
  • be true to yourself while respecting other people
  • approach conflict in a more creative and less reactive manner

Take this Basic workshop for personal growth or as the first step in becoming an AVP Conflict Resolution Facilitator.

Registration is by donation, with a suggested sliding scale from $25 to $125. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Please contact Steve at 619-851-7123 with any questions.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Alternatives to Violence Project is to empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation, and trust.

Description

The primary purpose of AVP groups is to offer individual tools for personal empowerment, enabling people to live their lives with dignity and self-respect. AVP facilitators serve the community by leading workshops with the goal of enhancing individual skills for peaceful reduction of conflict.

In 2016, AVP California councils around the state organized over 400 workshops in 26 prisons and jails, with over 6,400 participants, and almost 70 workshops in communities throughout the state with over 600 participants. This is an increase of 22% in total workshops over 2015! Making this happen is over 700 inmate facilitators and almost 250 community facilitators.
