Be part of Central Ohio history! The Central Ohio Fire Museum and Learning Center (COFM) is looking for volunteers to join our team as Museum Admissions/Tour Guides. We are located in downtown Columbus in restored Columbus Fire station #16, built in 1908. Volunteers will greet and interact with guests at the front desk, including handling cash register transactions. Volunteers will also give guided tours of the displays in the apparatus bay.

Supervised by staff, volunteer responsibilities will include:

  • Greeting all guests to the museum.
  • Providing tours of the artifacts and displays in the apparatus bay. (training provided)
  • Operating a cash register for admission and gift shop purposes. Using specific keys to track discounts and processing cash, checks or credit cards for admissions and purchases.
  • Working with staff to compile reports on admissions and sales.

Qualifications
  • Friendly, outgoing and interested in fire safety and history.
  • A script and training will be provided for conducting tours.
  • Excellent customer service attitude and able to interact with guests of all ages from around the world.
  • Volunteers need to be available to work a shift from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, at least once a month. Specific shifts can be arranged for volunteers.
  • Be comfortable handling sales transactions - cash register operations training will be provided.
  • Able to function independently, as well as take direction from staff and members of the board of directors.
  • Teaching experience or Fire/EMS service is helpful
  • Comfortable working with children.

Description

Step back in time and be a part of history. Located in the heart of Downtown Columbus, in an authentically restored 1908 Columbus Engine House, we offer guided historical tours followed up with age-appropriate fire safety education by one of our fire safety educators.

Join us as a volunteer and learn to guide our visitors through the historical tour of the museum or work in our gift shop, collecting admission and running the register. Our hours of operation are Tues-Sat 10 am - 4 pm. Volunteers may pick their days, as many days as they like, Tuesday through Saturday. Join our team today!
